A research study conducted by Ofcom between September and December 2010 found that the average download achieved by users is 1.3Mbs per second, with an average web page taking 8.5 seconds to download. Whilst this is an improvement on a few years ago, a comparison with fixed broadband shows that there is still a long way to go. The average fixed broadband download speed is 6.2MB per second, with the average webpage taking just under half a second to load.

Of the 5 main mobile broadband providers, o2, Vodafone and ‘3’ offered the fastest downloads compared to Orange and T-Mobile. The study found that O2 provided the best overall transfer speeds for mobile broadband.

  1. NOTES

It should be noted that the study focused on areas with ‘good' 3G coverage and looked only at mobile networks that use dongles and datacards – Smartphone mobile broadband usage was not included in this particular study, although OFCOM does plan to cover this area in the near future.
